The Banana Shire is littered with Historical features and experiences for you to enjoy.  From Museums and Homestead’s to Historical Villages, you don’t want to miss a thing!

Taroom to Theodore

96KM

On Yaldwyn Street in Taroom you can find the Leichhardt Tree. Continue up to the intersection and turn left into Kelman St. The Taroom Museum is located approximately 100m up the road on the left. From the museum, head back to the main street and west along Yaldwyn Street.  Follow it around the bend, past the Lions Park where it once again turns into the Leichhardt Highway at the intersection with Roma-Taroom Road. Turn right and follow for 95km.  Here you will arrive at another intersection.  Turn right here and head into Theodore.

Upon arriving in Theodore, follow ‘The Boulevard’ through town and turn right at Second Avenue.  Follow to the end and turn right again. On your left you will find the Dawson Folk Museum, housed in an old power house.

Theodore to Moura

49KM

From Theodore, head north along the Leichhardt Highway 7.5km to the Theodore Moura Road.  Turn left here and follow 41km until you reach Moura (and the intersection with Dawson Highway).  Turn left here and you will see Rotary Park (on your left).

Adjacent to Rotary Park is the water tower which just this year was given a face lift with a large cockatoo mural painted on it.  Just past the mural, in Gillespie Street you will find the recently opened Moura Miners Memorial, paying tribute to those who lost their lives during past mining disasters. Next door to the Memorial you will find the Moura Coal and Country Museum. Back on Dawson Highway, head west 8.3km and you will find Apex Park, on the Dawson River. This is a great spot to throw in a line or pull up for the night and recharge the batteries.

Moura to Banana

34KM

Turn right out of Apex Park and head back into Moura. Approximately 2.7km east of Moura on your left, you will come across the 150th Meridian Marker; the intangible line that measures Eastern Standard Time.

Continue 16km along Dawson Highway into Banana and turn right (following the Dawson Highway towards Biloela).  Just as you turn right, you will notice the statue of ‘Banana’ the Bullock after which the Banana Shire was named.

Banana to Biloela

99KM

Follow Dawson Highway 44km to Biloela.  Turn left onto Exhibition Avenue and follow to the end of the street where you will see Queensland Heritage Park.

From Queensland Heritage Park, head back to the highway and turn left.  Follow 2km through town to State Farm Road and turn left. 300m along State Farm Road you will discover the ‘Spirit of the Land Mural’ on your left.

Head back to the Highway and across the intersection and you will arrive at the Greycliffe Homestead. Now used as the headquarters for the Banana Shire Historical Society, you can visit the Homestead by appointment only (Ph: 07 4992 3959).
