Words Out West

The  award-winning Words Out West was once again a resounding success in 2025 for readers, writers, and word-lovers alike, right here on the Western Downs.  Be sure to book in early for the 2026 event. Program of events available on the website.
Words Out West: Western Downs Readers and Writers Fest takes a novel approach to storytelling, with a host of events for all ages and interests.
The main Festival Days at the Chinchilla Cultural Centre offer local and national storytelling talent featuring a number of well known Australian celebrities.  Join us at Books & Bubbles: sip on champagne, mingle with presenters, and hear incredible stories.
Immerse yourself in the day-long Writers Retreat in the beautiful Bunya Mountains, with a creative writing masterclass or a workshop learning the art of Haiku.
For a taste of how Words Out West does things differently, order at the bar and pull up a seat at one of the Schooners and Stories sessions offered around the region.  Jandowae, Miles and Tara.
With free Author Tour and School Days across the region, there’s something on offer for all word-lovers: big and small.
