There are a number of public art works that can be discovered within the Goondiwindi Region, boosting the value and aesthetics of publicly accessed spaces.

Public art works range from privately owned works (on public display), through to publicly owned works, either commissioned by a community group or the Goondiwindi Regional Council.

‘A Wonderful Bird Is The Pelican’ is located at the Goondiwindi Boat Ramp, on Elizabeth Drive Goondiwindi. The artist, Angus Wilson, describes the art work: “This was again an idea from scrap metal I had in the dump. Much acquired from a local irrigation farms clearing sale. I mounted it on a slab of timber from the development property in town mentioned above. Then a poem about the Pelican was displayed around the base. This poem was recited to me many times by my mother as a child going off to sleep. After displaying at the local show it was suggested by a local councillor to move it onto the levee bank beside the Macintyre River in town.”

Made from old agricultural parts and ephemera ‘Macintyre Cod Fossil’ also by Angus Wilson depicts the fossilised skeleton of a Murray Cod which is found in the Macintyre River. This work revitalizes local spaces by recontextualising and repurposing significant local and historical found objects to create unique interpretations of place.
