Town: Newcastle

Address: Scott Street, Newcastle, 2300, NSW

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Hidden behind a framework of rusting steel in the heart of Newcastle, the Convict Lumber Yard represents one of the earliest sites of convict industry in Australia.

The site was the subject of an extensive archaeological dig between 1989 and 1992, resulting in the discovery of hundreds of artefacts dating back to the first days of the Newcastle penal settlement.

Important Aboriginal materials were found at deep levels within the site, reflecting the ancient Aboriginal occupation of the region.

There are information panels erected around the site, detailing aspects of convict life and the indigenous history of the area.

The Convict Lumberyard is included in the Convict and Industry Walking Trail. A guide to this Trail is available at the Newcastle Visitor Information Centre.
