Primitives (Melbourne Fringe)

Town: Melbourne

Address: 522 Flinders St, Melbourne, 3000, VIC

Concert or Performance, Festivals and Celebrations

Presented by Whitfield Studio at Melbourne’s vibrant Speakeasy Theatre, Primitives is a brand new play by award winning director, writer, and producer, Willem Whitfield. The play unfolds during an afternoon rendezvous between a struggling artist, Van Brandt, and a wealthy young heiress, Alice. Their buzzing conversation, set against a dreamlike landscape, oscillates between the profound and the farcical and back again, as the pair scrutinise the purpose of art, the intricacies of love, and the universal search for meaning in an ever-changing world. Primitives is a uniquely Australian work, which holds a mirror up to the human experience in all its messy contradictions.

“This play was inspired by the birth of AI” says playwright Willem Whitfield, “For me, it’s a reflection on the meaning of art through the lens of the myth of Prometheus.”
