The Barefoot Surgeon – Dr. Sanduk Ruit and Ali Gripper
Start date: 12 Jul 2018 / End date: 13 Jul 2018
, Sydney 2000
In 1985, Fred and Gabi Hollows met a very young and keen Dr Sanduk Ruit in Nepal. From their first meeting it was obvious that he and Fred shared an obsession to prove that high-quality eyesight is a birthright of everyone. They stayed up late many nights consuming too much whisky, discussing their shared vision.
Like his mentor and friend, Dr Fred Hollows, he passionately believed that high-quality eyesight is a birthright of everyone. Over the past three decades, Dr Ruit has personally restored the sight of more than 120,000 people, using a revolutionary, inexpensive surgery he developed himself.
Many are too poor to travel to a hospital or clinic, so Dr. Ruit takes his mobile surgeries to them—to some of the most remote villages in the world. Ali Gripper, author of The Barefoot Surgeon, joins Dr Sanduk Ruit in conversation to share his extraordinary journey from a boy born in a tiny Himalayan town with no school, to one of the world’s most respected ophthalmologists.
